Holashtak (March 17th to March 25th, 2024):

Derived from the amalgamation of “Holi” and “Ashtak,” Holashtak signifies the eight days preceding the festival of Holi. During these eight days, certain auspicious ceremonies are avoided from a Vedic astrology perspective. It commences precisely seven days before Holika Dahan, and extends for eight days, concluding with the festivities of Dhulandi. It can also be said that Holashtak occurs from Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month till Purnima. Because it starts from Ashtami Tithi, hence it is also called Holashtak. Along with the Holi festival, preparations for Holika Dahan are also started from Holashtak. This year, Holi 2024 is on 25th March, 2024.

Traditionally, the festival spans two days. The first day involves Holika Puja and Dahan at an auspicious time, while on the second day, Holi is played with pomp with vibrant colours in an exuberant celebration. There are two main reasons for celebrating this festival, the first reason is that on this day nature is decorated with colorful flowers everywhere and the new crop begins, farmers rejoice in this joy. Legends Associated with Holi:

In ancient times there was a very powerful demon named Hiranyakashipu who started considering himself as God. He had banned taking the name of the Lord in his kingdom. Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Angered by Prahlad’s devotion, Hiranyakashipu gave him many harsh punishments, but he did not leave the path of devotion. Hiranyakshipu’s sister Holika had been given the boon that she could not be destroyed in a fire. Hiranyakashipu ordered that Holika sit in the fire with Prahlad in her lap. Holika got burnt while sitting in the fire, but Prahlad was saved because he was a devotee of God Vishnu. Prahlad emerged unscathed from the flames of Holika’s pyre, symbolising the victory of good over evil. Since then, Holi has been lit on this day in the memory of Lord Vishnu’s devotee Prahlad.
