Importance of Dhanteras:

Dhanteras (Dhan Trayodashi) is a Hindu festival celebrated on the third day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Kartik. Dhanvantari was born on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha, hence this date is known as Dhanteras. When Dhanvantari incarnated, he had a pot full of nectar (Amrit) in his hands. Lord Dhanvantari had appeared with the urn, which is why there is a tradition of buying utensils remains on this occasion. According to popular belief, it is also said that on this day things you buy become 13 times more due to the blessings of the Lord of wealth. On Dhanteras, people traditionally buy new utensils, jewelry, and other items to bring good luck and prosperity into their homes. On this occasion, people also purchase coriander seeds and keep them at home. After Diwali, people sow these seeds in their gardens or their fields. Dhanteras is celebrated two days before Diwali and this five-day festival is celebrated two days later till Bhaiya Dooj.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi:

First, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Install the idol or picture of Lord Dhanvantari in a clean place and sit facing east. After this, pray to Lord Dhanvantari by chanting the following mantra:-

Satyam Cha Yen Niratam Rogam Vidhootam,
Anveshit cha savidhim arogyamasya.
Gudham nigudham ausdharupam,
dhanvantarin cha satatam pranamami nityam.

Offer rice to the place of worship. After this take a sip of water from your palm (Achaman). Offer Gandh, Abir, Gulal flowers, Roli, etc. to the picture of Lord Dhanvantari. Offer Kheer as prasad in a silver vessel (if there is no silver vessel then prasad/naivedya can be offered in any other vessel also). After that again take a sip of water from your palm. Buy betel leaves, cloves, and betel nuts to offer the lord for mouth purification. Offer God’s clothes (Mauli) to Lord Dhanvantari. Lord Dhanvantari should also be offered revered medicines like Shankhapushpi, Tulsi, Brahmi, etc. Chant this mantra to wish to be cured of disease:-

Om Rudra Rog Nashay Dhanvantari Phat (ॐ रं रुद्र रोग नाशाय धन्वंतर्ये फट)

Apart from this, worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber in the same manner. Also, donating a lamp in the name of Yama in the evening has special significance. After worship, chant the following mantra. Chanting this mantra bestows immense blessings since it pleases Lord Dhanvantari, which leads to the attainment of wealth and prosperity.

Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye
Dhanadhanyasamriddhim Me Dehi Dapaya Svaha

ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये।
धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥
