Significance of Kartik Purnima (कार्तिक पूर्णिमा)

Kartik Purnima is the day of Kartikeya’s birth, which is widely celebrated all across India and Southeast Asia. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva commanded his sons — Kartikeya and Ganesh to circumambulate the earth for decidingthat who is worthy of coronation. Due to his heavy weight, it was impossible for Ganesh to orbit the earth while Kartikeya went for it on his favorite vahana peacock.

Kartikeya kept on orbiting the earth for years while Ganesh completed the circumambulation of his parents in a very short span. The latter got married and was coroneted. When Kartikeya returned, he got angry and went on penance in the jungle. When his parents tried persuading him, he cursed that any woman seeing me will remain a widow for seven births and males will experience hell.

To pacify him, all gods including Lord Shiva anointed him with vermilion and oil. He was made the commander of the gods’ army. Lord Kartikeya said that those who anoint him with oil and vermilion, their ancestors will be revered in AdiBaikunth. Since then, on every Kartik Purnima, millions of people gather in Lord Kartikeya’s temples for his darshan.
