Planets hold special significance in astrology. The state and alignment of the nine planets shape the trajectory of a person’s life, determining their successes and setbacks. Collectively known as the *Navagraha*, these nine planets are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each planet has its own specific requirements, forms of worship, and mantras, exerting a distinct influence on one’s life. Generally, a planet in an exalted state yields auspicious results, whereas a debilitated planet—or the presence of a planetary affliction—can prove detrimental. When analyzing a horoscope, each of the nine planets plays a unique role and possesses a distinct nature. Through this article, let us explore how each planet can influence a person’s life.

What are the Navagrahas?

The Navagrahas (nine celestial bodies) hold special significance in Hinduism. These planets are viewed in connection with every aspect of human life. Each planet possesses a distinct nature, and the influence of its energy is evident in human existence. It is believed that Navagraha Puja is performed to balance the auspicious effects of these planets and mitigate their inauspicious influences. In reality, planetary afflictions (*Graha Dosha*) can cause various troubles in a person’s life. To counter this, several remedies are prescribed, such as planting trees, making donations, chanting mantras, and wearing gemstones.

Let us understand how each of the Navagrahas influences a person’s life.

The Navagrahas, or the nine planets, have a profound impact on various facets of human life.

The Sun (Surya)

If the Sun is strong in one’s horoscope, it boosts self-confidence and creates opportunities for financial gain. Its influence is visible in one’s vitality. The Sun is known as the ‘King of Planets.’ It grants a person leadership qualities, progress, and respect in life. A favorable position fosters leadership abilities, whereas an afflicted Sun can lead to persistent heart ailments and eye disorders. To strengthen it, wear red and saffron-colored clothing. Donate wheat to strengthen the influence of the Sun.

The Moon (Chandra)

This planet is considered the significator of emotions and the mind. It governs the constant flow of thoughts within a person’s mind and influences their mental and emotional health. A strong Moon in the horoscope enables one to easily control emotions and fosters a deep desire to help others; it also makes one naturally attractive to people. Conversely, an afflicted Moon leads to emotional imbalance and mental unrest, often resulting in conflicts and strained relationships with others.

Mars

If Mars is exalted (placed in its sign of exaltation) in a person’s horoscope, they are extremely courageous and always ready to take action. They are physically strong and powerful. Once they set their mind to a task, they ensure it is completed. Conversely, if Mars is debilitated (placed in its sign of debilitation) in the horoscope, this same energy turns negative. This makes the person highly aggressive and stubborn; they tend to pick fights over trivial matters and act hastily when making decisions. Worshipping Lord Muruga helps strengthen the planet Mars and alleviates associated troubles.

Mercury

Mercury is considered the fourth planet among the Navagrahas (the nine celestial bodies). It stays in a single zodiac sign for a period ranging from 14 to 30 days. Regarded as the son of the Moon, Mercury is the symbol of intellect. Individuals with a strong Mercury carve a niche for themselves in society through their speech and have a keen desire to learn new things. They possess the art of conversation and an exceptional ability to express their thoughts. They are also adept at adapting to changing circumstances. If Mercury is debilitated in your horoscope, you may face difficulties in communication and encounter challenges in the workplace. Learning and grasping new concepts also becomes more difficult.

Jupiter

Jupiter is known as the *Devaguru* (Preceptor of the Gods); it is a massive planet and a source of immense wisdom. When this planet is exalted in a person’s horoscope, it fosters wisdom and understanding. Additionally, the individual develops an inclination towards spirituality, and a sense of curiosity—along with a desire to learn new things—grows within them. A positive influence brings opportunities for success and prosperity into the person’s life. Conversely, if Jupiter exerts a negative influence on the horoscope, the individual may struggle with weight gain and heart-related ailments; they may also tend to spend excessive time indulging in worldly pleasures and sleeping. To strengthen Jupiter, one should donate white chickpeas and wear yellow clothing on Thursdays.

Venus

The planet Venus represents love and beauty. A strong Venus in the birth chart fosters an inclination towards beauty and artistic abilities, while also bringing worldly comforts and financial gains. Conversely, a weak or afflicted Venus can lead to relationship issues, a tendency towards ostentation, or a materialistic mindset. It may also result in health problems such as a loss of appetite, skin ailments, and a lack of discipline. To strengthen Venus, one should wear white or light blue clothing.

Saturn (Shani)

The planet Saturn is considered a symbol of discipline and responsibility. It is also known as the deity of justice. Lord Shani bestows results upon you based on your actions (karma). Under its influence, a person’s sense of responsibility and endurance increases; they tend to become extremely serious and disciplined. When positioned favorably in the birth chart, Saturn can instill discipline, determination, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Conversely, if Saturn is debilitated (in its weakest position) in a person’s chart, they may face delays and pessimism in all their endeavors, along with experiences of isolation or separation.

Rahu

Rahu is a shadow planet and holds the eighth position among the *Navagraha* (the nine celestial bodies in Vedic astrology). It takes one and a half years to transit through a single zodiac sign. In Vedic astrology, Rahu represents influences related to one’s actions (*karma*). If it is exalted (strongly positioned), the individual gains wealth and opulence. Saturday is considered the most auspicious day for worshipping Rahu; offering black gram (*kala chana*) and coconut on this day helps strengthen its influence.

Ketu

Ketu is also a shadow planet. It signifies the karma, desires, and lessons carried over from a person’s past lives. Ketu yields results based on an individual’s actions. If Ketu is exalted in your chart, it offers protection against hidden enemies and conspiracies. Depending on its alignment with other planets, it can exert both positive and negative influences. A weak Ketu can lead to issues such as mental health problems, poor eyesight, and a lack of concentration. To remedy this, it is customary to donate horse gram (*kulthi*), rice, and seven types of grains.
