History and Origin of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja holds great importance in Hindu religion and there is a perception that the king (which king) requested to come to the old priests and worship the Sun God traditionally.

They worshipped the Sun God by recitation of mantras and stotras from the ancient Rigveda.

The ancient Chhath Puja done by Pandavas and Draupadi of Hastinapur (New Delhi) to solve their problems and get back to their state.

It is also believed that Chhath Puja started by Karna, the son of the Sun. He was a great warrior during the war of Mahabharata and was the ruler of ‘Ang’ country (Munger district of Bihar).

On the day of Chhath Puja, the Chhathi Maiya (wife of Lord Sun) is also worshipped. The Chhathi Maiya is also known as ‘Usha’ in Vedas.

‘Usha’ means morning (first ray of the day). People pray to the Chhathi Maiya to overcome their troubles as well as to attain salvation or liberation.

The second historical story behind celebrating Chhath Puja is of Lord Rama. It is believed that after 14 years of exile when Lord Rama and mother Sita came back to Ayodhya, Lord Sun was worshipped in the month of Kartik.

By fasting during the enthronement and from that time onwards, Chhath Puja became an important and traditional festival of Hinduism.

The Story of Chhath Puja

A long time ago, there was a king named Priyabrata and his wife was Malini. They lived very happily, but there was a reason for sorrow in their lives that they had no children.

He decided to perform a very big sacrificial ‘Yagna’ to be blessed with children with the help of Maharishi Kashyap.

But after 9 months, she gave birth to a dead child. The king was very unhappy and decided to commit suicide. His wife became pregnant because of the impact of the sacrificial fire.

Suddenly a Goddess appeared before him while committing suicide. The goddess said, “I am Goddess Chhathi and whoever worships me with pure mind and soul must receive children.”

King Priyabrata did the same and received a beautiful and loving child as the blessings of the Goddess Chhathi. Since then, people have started celebrating Chhath Puja.
