Every year, with the rainy season, begins Chaturmas, a spiritual period . This time is a symbol of sadhana, fasting, restraint and devotion, when the grace of the gods is especially received. This is the same period when Lord Vishnu goes into yoga nidra and the responsibility of the universe is handed over to various gods and goddesses.
What is Chaturmasya?
‘Chaturmasya’ means ‘four months’. It is a religious concept in which Lord Vishnu goes into yoga nidra in Kshir Sagar. This period is considered very auspicious from the spiritual point of view.
The main purpose of Chaturmasya is to inspire a person towards self-introspection, restraint, and devotion. During this period, auspicious works like marriage, housewarming, mundan etc. are considered forbidden. Instead, meditation, chanting, fasting and service are given priority.
What is the time duration of Chaturmasya in 2025?
In the year 2025, Chaturmasya is starting from 6 July 2025 (Devshayani Ekadashi, Ashadh month) and it will end on 1 November 2025 (Prabodhini Ekadashi, Kartik month).
During these four months, the responsibility of the creation is given to different gods, who operate it in a particular order.
Operation of the creation by different gods and goddesses
Guru Purnima – The role of Gurus, the carriers of religion and direction The festival of Guru Purnima comes with the beginning of Chaturmasya. It is believed that when Vishnu goes to rest, the initial responsibility is in the hands of the Gurus. They protect religion, give direction to the society and guide the disciples.
Shravan month – The reins of the creation are in the hands of Lord Shiva After Guru Purnima comes Shravan month, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In this period, Shiva operates the universe. He is called Bhole Bhandari because he gets pleased quickly with devotion done with a true heart. Devotees perform Rudrabhishek, fasting, chanting and meditation during this time.
Bhadrapada month – Energy in devotees from Shri Krishna’s leelas. After this comes Bhadrapada month, in which the festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated. Lord Krishna keeps the universe balanced at this time with his leelas and devotion. Spiritual energy remains through Dahi-Handi, Raasleela, and Shri Krishna stories.
Ganesh Chaturthi – Destruction of obstacles and establishment of auspiciousness Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. During this period, the responsibility of the universe is given to Vighnaharta Ganapati. He removes all obstacles and becomes a symbol of new beginnings.
Navratri – Power is operated by nine forms of Maa Durga In the Navratri coming in Ashwin month, Goddess Durga protects the universe. For nine nights, nine forms of the Goddess are worshipped, which destroy negative forces and protect the devotees.
Deepawali/Diwali – Prosperity and balance by Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera. Deepawali falls on Kartik Amavasya, when Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera run the universe. This time is a symbol of wealth, splendor and good fortune. We get the boon of prosperity from Goddess Lakshmi and stability from Kubera.
After this, Lord Vishnu awakens again on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi and takes the responsibility of the universe in his hands again.
Now that Sawan has begun… this is the best time to worship Shiva.
Shravan month, i.e. the first month of Chaturmasya, is completely dedicated to Lord Shiva. This period is very sacred for Shiva devotees. It is believed that at this time Bholenath gets pleased very quickly and provides the desired fruits to his devotees.In Sawan, offering water, milk, Belpatra, Dhatura etc. on Shivling and performing Rudrabhishek is especially fruitful.
