A total of 24 Ekadashis occur throughout the year, and each Ekadashi holds its own unique significance. The Parma Ekadashi, falling on June 11, 2026, is particularly special because it occurs during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of Adhikmas (the intercalary month); furthermore, the Ekadashi occurring during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of this very same month is known as Padmini Ekadashi. It is widely believed that those who observe a fast on this day attain progress and growth in their lives. Due to its occurrence during Adhikmas, this observance is also referred to as Kamala Ekadashi or Purushottami Ekadashi. A distinctive feature of this festival is that it occurs only once every three years.

Learn the Legend of the Parma Ekadashi (or Kamala Ekadashi) Fast

Once, in a village named Avantipur, there lived a highly learned scholar who had five sons. All his children were extremely obedient and were widely praised throughout the village. However, one of his sons was named Jayasharma. He was riddled with vices, and everyone around him was constantly troubled by his behavior. Due to his sinful conduct, all his relatives—including his own father—eventually disowned him. Distressed by the people’s scorn and weary of his situation, he left the village and wandered deep into a forest.

He began to reside there permanently. As fate would have it, one day he serendipitously arrived at the holy pilgrimage site of Prayag. Tormented by hunger, he began to wander aimlessly, searching for the hermitage of a sage. After a prolonged search, he spotted the hermitage of Sage Harimitra; upon seeing it, he was filled with immense joy. Indeed, during *Purushottam Mas* (or *Adhikmas*), a large crowd of devotees would typically gather at that very spot. Now, he too went there and sat down amongst the people.

A large number of Brahmins were present there. Sitting right there, he reverently extolled the glories of Kamala Ekadashi and listened to the entire narrative. That story is supremely meritorious and bestows both worldly enjoyments and liberation. Thus, Jayasharma not only listened to the tale of Ekadashi in accordance with the prescribed rituals but also observed the fast at the sage’s hermitage.

During the night, Goddess Lakshmi appeared and addressed the Brahmin, saying, “O Brahmin, because you have observed the Ekadashi fast with due rites and devotion, you shall receive my blessings and attain great fortune.” She further declared, “By the grace of Lord Hari, I have descended from Vaikuntha Dham specifically to grant you a boon.”

Goddess Lakshmi bestowed her boon upon the Brahmin and subsequently vanished. Consequently, the Brahmin attained happiness and immense prosperity. Now, filled with wealth and abundance, he returned to his father. Thus, anyone who listens to the glory and significance of this day on Ekadashi becomes liberated from all sins.
