According to the scriptures, a cow is as sacred as the Ganges. A cow is also referred to as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Just as Goddess Lakshmi provides wealth and prosperity, the cow provides health in the form of its milk. Their offspring cultivate the fields. In this way, cows are considered sacred and revered by all of humanity. Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada (the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Kartik) is celebrated as Govardhan Puja. On this day, cows are worshipped as a symbol of reverence.

Distinctive dishes are prepared for cows, and they are adorned with a tilak (a mark made with turmeric), and flower garlands are placed around their necks. Their feet are touched as a mark of respect. Moreover, on this day, their normal work or tasks are prohibited and they get a day of rest.

The legend of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan mountain as protection from torrential rains also relates to this festival. People commemorate this event with great joy.
