Puja vidhi:

Govardhan Puja is celebrated after one day of Diwali. And the aspect of this ritual is making a small hill out of cow dung and mud.

Chappan bhog 56 kinds of food- are offered to Lord Krishna. Miniature Govardhan Mountain is enhanced with flowers. Unboiled milk, homemade sweets, bath, etc. are offered to the hill.

Meaning of Govardhan Puja:

Devotees salute Shri Krishna and thank the Govardhan Parvat -who saved the people of Braj Bhoomi after Indra Dev caused massive floods to avenge them.

They offer a variety of food preparations to the Lord and Govardhan’s parvat. In some places, Chhapan Bhog, a platter consisting of 56 recipes are made and offered to the deity as a token of gratitude.

The food is presented as a miniature mountain and is also known as Annakut. Devotees from the Braj region (consisting of present-day Mathura and Vrindavan) surround the remains of the Govardhan Parvat and pay homage to it.

Legend of Govardhan Puja:

According to puja services one of the legends mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, the people of the Braj region would make huge offerings and sacrifices to appease Lord Indra and seek his blessings.

Once Lord Krishna, who was then a child, wondered why one should resort to appeasement. He firmly believed that appeasement should be discouraged. And Bhakti (devotion) should be the only way to connect with God.

After realizing that Krishna raised a point, Nanda and the Brijwasis ended the tradition of offerings to Indra Dev. Instead, they chose to make their Karma.

His decision to end the tradition enraged Indra and to avenge the insult, he hit the region with torrential rains and thunderstorms. Indra’s anger caused the loss of property and livestock.

People were displaced and suffered massive losses. And to end his sufferings, Krishna lifted the gigantic Govardhan Mountain with his little finger and thus provided shelter for people, and cattle.

Indra continued with his destructive plan for seven days and seven nights, and on the eighth day, he admitted defeat. Thus, he bowed to the boy, who was the embodiment of none other than Lord Vishnu.

Annakoot for Govardhan Puja:

Annakoot is a mixture of various cereals that are offered for Lord Krishna to worship him. After the Puja, these sweets are distributed among the devotees of the Lord.

In various temples, during the night vigil of Annakoot, songs and dances are also performed, and the worship of Lord Krishna yearns for a prosperous life.
