Diwali 2023: Diwali Muhurat, Tithi, and Significance

Diwali 2023

This year, Diwali 2023, also known as Lakshmi Puja, falls on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

Significance of Diwali:

Diwali, celebrated every year on the day of Kartik Amavasya, holds immense significance. It is attributed to various legends. One of them is the return of Lord Shri Ram to Ayodhya after defeating the tyrant King Ravana of Lanka. The joyous occasion of his return led to the celebration of Diwali. In the belief of Lord Krishna’s devotees, this day marks the slaying of the oppressive demon King Narakasura, bringing happiness and prosperity to the people who showed their appreciation by lighting diyas or oil lamps. Additionally, according to another mythological tale, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Lord Narasimha to vanquish the demon King Hiranyakashipu. On this day, during the churning of the ocean, the goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari appeared. Diwali Muhurat has immense significance in various other religious traditions as well. According to Jain followers, the Nirvana day of the twenty-fourth Tirthankara Mahavir Swami is also on Diwali. Diwali is also important for Sikhs because on this day the foundation stone of the Golden Temple was laid in Amritsar in 1577. And apart from this, on the day of Diwali in 1619, the sixth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Hargobind Singh Ji was released from jail. Similarly, many beliefs and stories are associated with the festival of Diwali.

From a spiritual perspective, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. Lighting lamps signifies dispelling ignorance within and kindling the light of knowledge. It is believed that lighting lamps not only eradicates darkness but also fills one’s heart and mind with wisdom and purifies the soul. The significance of Lakshmi Puja is closely linked to wealth, prosperity, and the success of businesses. Business owners eagerly await Diwali, as it is believed that the blessings of this puja ensure a year filled with financial growth. Diwali also marks the beginning of the new year and infuses new enthusiasm in every person, in every way.
