The chanting of mantras holds special significance during worship. The festival of Mahashivratri is approaching. This is an auspicious occasion when Lord Shiva is worshipped. Besides observing a fast on this day, a Rudrabhishek (ritualistic bathing of the Shiva Lingam) is also performed. Chanting mantras during the puja makes the worship more fruitful. It is believed that those who dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the worship of God have their wishes fulfilled. To receive Lord Shiva’s blessings, the four periods of the day are considered especially important, leading to the attainment of Dharma (righteousness), Kama (desire), Moksha (liberation), and Artha (wealth).
Worshiping at night on this occasion also holds special importance. According to the Puranas, there is a tradition of performing puja in the evening, late night, midnight, and early morning. Staying awake all night for Abhishek (ritual bathing) and meditation brings spiritual benefits and liberation. It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva manifested from his formless state into the tangible form of the Shiva Lingam. Furthermore, the marriage of Shiva and Parvati took place on this auspicious day. Chanting mantras with proper pronunciation during the puja is also a way to receive Lord Shiva’s blessings.
