This year Kartik month begins from 17 October and will continue till 15 November. Hindus lit lamp (deepam) in earthen pot (diya) facing the sky to offer their respect and remembrance to their departed ancestors. Theybelieve that heaven (swarg) is situated there high in the sky and our departed ancestors watch over us in this mortal world. This ritual is basically to remember and make them notice us in this world. Beginning with the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month of Hindi calendar this ritual is to be continued till the full Moon day (Purnima) of Shukla Paksha of this month. There are a few special dates during this one month period, when deep daan is performed for some special purposes.

On 27 October, the ritual of deep daan is observed to please Yama, the god of death. This ritual is to repeat on 28 October also and on 29 October, on the occasion of Naraka Chaturdashi, Hindu people perform ‘Tarpan’ for YamaRaaj also. People of Bengal lit 14 pradip on this day and place them in different places, like Tulsi Manch, four different directions of the house, in front of the temple at home and so on.

On 30 October, on the auspicious day of Deepawali, deep daan is to be performed in the evening at temples to please deity. People residing in the banks of Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Godavari, Shipra and other holy rivers, offer deep daan for those rivers also, in the evening time, daily during this Kartik month. This ritual comes to an end on 15 November with the beginning of Maargsheersh month of Hindi calendar.

As per Hindu religious beliefs, Kartik month is considered as the most auspicious month because Lord Vishnu wakes up from His yognidra after a period of four months, approximately. Dhanteras, the most auspicious day for buying gold, silver and other precious metals and utensils for household use, falls in this Kartik month. Diwali, the festival of lights and celebration of the homecoming of Lord Rama after killing Ravana, comes in the month of Kartik only.

Bhai Dooj, the festival depicting the love between brothers and sisters, is also observed in this month.
