According to the Hindu calendar, numerous fasts are observed and festivals celebrated with deep devotion every year. Among these, the Ekadashi fast—observed twice a month—holds special significance. This fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu; observing it for spiritual purification ensures that Lord Vishnu’s grace remains constantly upon His devotees. It is important to understand what Ekadashi signifies. Let us explore what the Ekadashi fast entails.

What is the meaning of Ekadashi fast?

This fast is not merely an act of abstaining from food but a simple way to maintain inner balance. It is observed twice a month on the eleventh day (*Ekadashi Tithi*) of both the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) and *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon). Worshipping Lord Vishnu, abstaining from grains, and maintaining a *Sattvic* (pure and simple) lifestyle on this day are considered highly auspicious.

‘Ekadashi’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘eleventh’. The purpose of this fast is to control the ten senses and the mind by withdrawing them from worldly distractions, allowing the individual to remain immersed in devotion. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped according to prescribed rituals; His name is chanted, and listening to the *Vrat Katha* (the sacred story associated with the fast) is also a customary practice. Observing this helps maintain peace and emotional balance in one’s life.

Understand the religious significance of the Ekadashi fast.

According to ancient scriptures, anyone who observes the Ekadashi fast with true sincerity and devotion is cleansed of all sins and sorrows. It is known as *Papnashini* (destroyer of sins) and *Mokshadayini* (bestower of salvation). Although there are usually 24 Ekadashis in a year, the number increases if an *Adhik Maas* (an extra lunar month) occurs during the year. The Ekadashi that falls before the full moon (*Purnima*) is known as *Purnima Ekadashi*, while the one falling before the new moon (*Amavasya*) is called *Amavasya Ekadashi*. The fast is broken only after sunrise. Observing this fast regularly helps in gaining control over one’s senses and improving one’s habits.

Rules to follow on Ekadashi

Many people observe a fast on Ekadashi. Additionally, on this auspicious occasion, one should abstain from consuming lentils, rice, wheat, and salt. While one should avoid certain fruits, drinking a solution of lemon and sugar is beneficial; it resolves digestive issues and alleviates the problem of loss of appetite. One should also avoid consuming vegetables and fruits such as eggplant, carrots, cauliflower, watermelon, muskmelon, and bananas on this day. Along with maintaining physical health, it is essential to keep the mind calm. Practicing silent chanting (*Maun Jap*) is considered highly auspicious, and singing devotional songs (*Bhajan-Kirtan*) throughout the night ensures the continued grace of the Lord. During this spiritual practice, one should refrain from using harsh words or getting angry with others.

These rules should be followed not only on the day of Ekadashi itself but throughout the period spanning from Dashami (the tenth day) to Dwadashi (the twelfth day).

Benefits of observing the Ekadashi fast

Destruction of sins

According to religious beliefs, observing the Ekadashi fast ensures the special grace of Lord Vishnu upon His devotees, thereby cleansing them of all their sins.

Attainment of Moksha

Those who observe the fast with complete devotion and in accordance with the prescribed rituals are cleansed of their sins, leading to the attainment of *Moksha*. This also eliminates all sorrows and sufferings in life.

Purification of the soul

Observing this fast helps calm both the body and the mind. Fasting helps maintain physical health, while controlling the senses fosters the purification of the soul.

Controlling the mind

Those who worship Lord Vishnu while observing the fast according to the proper rituals experience a balancing of the mind. This enhances inner peace and brings clarity to one’s thoughts. Consequently, work efficiency improves, and one gains greater focus in their tasks.

Rituals for the Ekadashi Fast

To observe this fast, wake up early in the morning, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Then, place an image or idol of Lord Vishnu in your place of worship.

Make a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) to observe the fast and chant mantras to attain spiritual peace.

Offer sandalwood paste, unbroken rice grains (*Akshat*), Tulsi leaves, and flowers during the worship. Additionally, offer fruits and dry fruits.

Remember Lord Vishnu and sing devotional songs (*Bhajans*) throughout the day; this brings peace to the mind.

On the following day—Dwadashi—worship Lord Hari. After performing the prescribed rituals following sunrise, offer a meal to a Brahmin and then break the fast (*Paran*).

To know more about Ekadashi Fasting, talk to our astrologers now!

For more, find us on Instagram.

It would not be an exaggeration to call our country a land of fasts and festivals.
