When it comes to observing a fast, some people undertake a Nirjala (waterless) fast while engaging in worship and prayer. Observing a fast in this manner is considered highly meritorious. Similarly, for the upcoming (Nirjala Ekadashi) on June 25th, the prescribed practice involves observing a fast without consuming any water. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped, and the Nirjala fast is observed. Consuming water is considered strictly prohibited on this day. It is believed that undertaking the *Nirjala* fast yields spiritual merits equivalent to those obtained from observing all twenty-four Ekadashis. What is Nirjala Ekadashi?<\/strong><\/p>

The Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Jyeshtha is known as Nirjala Ekadashi. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped and venerated with full rituals and rites, observed without consuming any food or water. In Sanatan Dharma, this day holds immense spiritual significance. This fast is particularly special for those who are unable to observe the Ekadashi fast throughout the rest of the year. By observing a fast on this day, one receives the blessings of Lord Vishnu manifold. It is believed that those who undertake this fast attain liberation from their sins in this life, and the Divine guides them on their path. In addition to fasting, the chanting of mantras, acts of charity, and self-discipline hold special importance on this day.<\/p>

The Mythological Legend Associated with Nirjala Ekadashi<\/strong><\/p>

According to legend, when Yudhishthira sought information from Lord Krishna regarding the sacred *Nirjala Ekadashi* fast, the Lord narrated the following story: Once, Sage Vyasa told Bhimasena that one should abstain from consuming food on the day of *Ekadashi*. Upon hearing this, Bhima became agitated and declared that he could not survive without eating. He requested Sage Vyasa to grant him permission to observe a single fast on a specific day\u2014rather than observing all 24 *Ekadashi* fasts throughout the year\u2014such that he would still receive the spiritual merits equivalent to having fasted for the entire year. Thereupon, the Maharishi advised him to observe a fast on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi. He further cautioned that this fast might prove arduous for him. During this observance, one must undertake the fast at sunrise and abstain from consuming both food and water until the following sunrise. He also explained that observing the fast in this manner would yield supreme spiritual rewards and ensure the continued blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that observing a fast on this day absolves all sins and leads to the attainment of salvation. Since that time, Bhima began to observe this fast. For this very reason, this festival is also referred to as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.<\/p>

Understanding the Worship Rituals for the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast<\/strong><\/p>

First, on the day of Ekadashi, wake up before sunrise, take a ritual bath, and\u2014clad in clean clothes\u2014prepare yourself for the worship ceremony.<\/p>

Next, clean the designated place of worship, spread a clean yellow cloth, and\u2014standing before the idol or image of Lord Vishnu\u2014take a solemn vow to observe the fast.<\/p>

Perform the worship rituals and offer yellow flowers to the Lord. Additionally, offer Tulsi (holy basil) leaves, fruits, and a lighted lamp (*Deep*). Also, offer *Naivedya* (sacred food offering).<\/p>

Chant sacred mantras and listen to the divine legends (Katha) of Lord Vishnu. Furthermore, recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu); doing so brings peace and tranquility to the mind.<\/p>

Following this, perform the evening Aarti and immerse yourself in singing devotional hymns and chants. While glorifying the Lord, cast out all negative thoughts from your mind.<\/p>

If you are physically fit, stay awake throughout the night to meditate upon and remember the Divine. This fosters spiritual growth of the mind and brings about inner peace.<\/p>

On this day, donate water, food, umbrellas, clothing, footwear, and other essential items. Additionally, feeding fodder to cows and engaging in their service is also considered a meritorious act.<\/p>
