He was born on the full moon day of the month of Vaishakh—an occasion known as Buddha Purnima. This year, the festival will be celebrated on May 1, 2026. His birthplace is Lumbini, which is now located in Nepal. Prince Siddhartha, who was raised amidst the comforts of palaces, became deeply troubled when he witnessed suffering, sickness, and old age in life. At the age of 29, he renounced his domestic life and departed for the forest in search of peace and enlightenment.

After years of rigorous asceticism, he embraced a path of balance and moderation, and delivered a message of peace to the people. Consequently, the day of Buddha Purnima is regarded as highly significant—not only by his followers but also within the tradition of Sanatan Dharma.

Why is Buddha Purnima referred to as a “triple festival”?

It is a unique day—the very day on which three momentous events took place. Buddha Purnima marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha. Lord Buddha was a spiritual master whose teachings profoundly influenced people. According to Hinduism, Buddha is revered as an avatar of Lord Vishnu; consequently, he is worshipped with special reverence on this auspicious occasion. Let us take a closer look at the various facets associated with his life—from his birth to his attainment of Nirvana and Mahaparinirvana.

When will the festival of Buddha Purnima be celebrated?

According to the Panchang (almanac), the Purnima (full moon) phase will commence on the night of April 30th; however, the actual fast will be observed the following morning—that is, on May 1st. Additionally, the ritual Purnima bath will also take place on this very day. Large crowds of devotees gather at pilgrimage sites specifically for this Purnima bath.

Commencement of Purnima: April 30th, 9:15 PM

Conclusion of Purnima: May 1st, 10:52 PM

Auspicious Time (Muhurat) for Puja: May 1st, from 11:42 AM to 12:45 PM

Evening Prayers: 6:56 PM to 8:42 PM

The festival of Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on a Friday. Strict adherence to the prescribed timings is essential for both the ritual bath and the worship ceremonies.

Significance of Nirvana and Parinirvana

Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. His thoughts radiated a sense of peace and tranquillity. Through rigorous asceticism, he realized the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Through his teachings, he inspired people to embark on a quest for wisdom, compassion, and peace. In doing so, he showed people the path leading toward the cessation of suffering.

Following the attainment of wisdom and heightened consciousness comes Nirvana, which is regarded as the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice. Upon attaining it, an individual gains liberation from the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Lord Buddha attained Nirvana after engaging in rigorous asceticism, deep contemplation, and spiritual inquiry. The term ‘Nirvana’ originates from a Sanskrit word meaning “to extinguish” or “to cease.”

According to Buddhist philosophy, the three poisons that fill the world with suffering are identified as greed, hatred, and delusion. Consequently, an individual is unable to attain liberation. In this context, Nirvana is regarded as the supreme state of peace and enlightenment. In this state, an individual—detached from worldly attachments and fetters—experiences boundless peace and compassion. According to Buddhist teachings, Nirvana is a state that cannot be attained through external means, but rather through inner realization. It is a mental state entirely free from all dualities.

The term Parinirvana is derived from Sanskrit and signifies the end—specifically, the final moment. In Buddhism, the passing of the Buddha is referred to as *Parinirvana*. This moment marks the cessation of the Buddha’s physical existence and his complete liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Through this event, the Buddha concludes his worldly journey, breaks free from the cycle of birth and death, and enters the state of ultimate liberation.

Lord Buddha, who served as a spiritual guide and imparted teachings to the people, attained *Parinirvana* at the age of 80. He had married at the age of 19 and also had a son; however, his mind found no contentment in the confines of the palace or in worldly comforts. Consequently, at the age of 29, he renounced his domestic life and began living in the forests. He spent over forty years sharing his wisdom with people from all walks of life, inspiring countless individuals among them to embark upon their own spiritual practice.

Follow these guidelines when performing worship on this day:

On the day of Purnima, the Peepal tree is worshipped. It is believed that doing so ensures the perpetual grace of Goddess Lakshmi. Furthermore, it is said to resolve *Pitra Dosha* (ancestral afflictions).

To enhance happiness and prosperity within the home, it is customary to listen to the Katha (sacred narrative) of Lord Satyanarayan on this day. This practice is believed to alleviate all forms of suffering.

To accrue spiritual merit, one should donate white-coloured items on this auspicious occasion. Specifically, donations of milk, curd, rice, and sugar are highly recommended.

Additionally, offering Arghya (ritual water oblation) to the Moon God on the night of Purnima is considered highly auspicious. This practice helps maintain emotional balance in one’s life. To perform this ritual, mix a small amount of milk, rice, and sugar into the water.

हमारे ज्योतिषियों से अभी बात करें!

For more, find us on Instagram.

Gautam Buddha arrived on Earth two and a half thousand years ago and illuminated the entire world with his teachings.
