This festival is counted among the auspicious dates present in the Hindu calendar. This means that if you want to perform any auspicious work, it can be done on this day. According to the Puranas, this auspicious day is related to Lord Krishna and Radha Ji. Holi is played on this day and this festival is celebrated with great joy especially in Braj. In Vrindavan and Mathura, not only is Holi played with flowers but Lord Krishna and Radha Ji are also worshipped with full rituals.

Why is Phulera Dooj Celebrated?

Phulera Dooj means “a day adorned with fruits.” The festival of Phulera Dooj is celebrated every year on the second day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) in the month of Phalgun. It also marks the beginning of Holi in Braj. On this day, flowers are showered in Mathura and Vrindavan. It is believed that this is the sacred day when Lord Krishna first began playing Holi with flowers. Holi is celebrated throughout Braj, including Mathura and Vrindavan. According to the Puranas, worshipping Lord Krishna and Radha Rani on this day brings desired results. From this day, preparations for Holi begin in temples.

According to scriptures, Radha Rani is considered the goddess of nature and love. Once Lord Krishna failed to meet Radha, who had been waiting for him for a long time. Trees, plants, creepers, and forests began to dry up. Then, when Lord Krishna arrived in Barsana, greenery spread everywhere.

Radha became extremely sad, causing all the surrounding flowers to wither and silence prevailed everywhere. Upon learning of this, Lord Krishna went to Radha, who was overjoyed. Consequently, more flowers began to bloom, and greenery returned. This captivating sight delighted Lord Krishna. It is believed that this was the day when the tradition of playing Holi with flowers began. Radha and Krishna played Holi, and upon seeing them, the cowherds and cowherd girls showered them with flowers. Since then, this day has been celebrated.

How is Lord Krishna worshipped on this day?

According to the calendar, Phulera Dooj will begin at 4:57 pm on February 18th and end at 3:58 pm on February 19th. According to the planetary positions, Siddha Yoga is forming on this day, along with Lakshmi Narayan and Budhaditya Yoga. The auspicious time for Phulvara Dooj will be from 5:14 am to 6:05 am, followed by afternoon from 12:12 pm to 12:58 pm, and late night from 12:09 pm to 1:00 am.

On this day, the idols of Lord Krishna and Radha Rani are decorated with fruits and gulal (coloured powder). Fruits and sweets are then offered to them. Bhajans and aarti are also performed. This creates a completely devotional atmosphere in Vraj, and everyone is immersed in the spirit of devotion.

On this day, Holi is played with flowers in temples and homes and auspicious functions including house warming, marriage, mundan, naming ceremony and Annaprashan are also performed.

Worshiping Lord Krishna and Radha Rani with colorful flowers on this day increases the love between husband and wife, and also leads to the attainment of a desired life partner. Those facing difficulties and delays in marriage should offer cosmetics to Radha Ji on this day and then keep one of the items with themselves. This helps in facilitating marriage.
