According to the scriptures, a cow is as sacred as the Ganges. A cow is also referred to as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Just as Goddess Lakshmi provides wealth and prosperity, the cow provides health in the form of its milk. Their offspring cultivate the fields. In this way, cows are considered sacred and revered by all of humanity. Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada (the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Kartik) is celebrated as Govardhan Puja.
