Why and how to celebrate Bhai Dooj? Know the auspicious time

Importance : It is the festival of love between brothers and sisters, when sisters puts ‘Teeka’ on the forehead of their brothers to wish long life and prosperity for them. In return, brothers take vows to protect his sister from any untowards incident and presents gift items, as per their capacity.

Story : Wife of Lord Sun, Chhaya had two children, YamRaaj and Yamuna. Yamuna used to invite her brother to come to pay a visit to her house and YamRaaj was unable to fulfil her sister’s wishes, due to some or the other reason. Finally, YamRaaj went to see Yamuna on the second lunar day of bright lunar half of Kartik month and seeing her brother at her place Yamuna became very happy. She offered him food items and entertained him as per her capacity. YamRaaj became very happy with the gestures of his sister and asked her to make a wish to fulfil it. Yamuna requested him to come to her house every year the same day and took promise from YamRaaj that every sister who put ‘Teeka’ on the forehead of her brother on this tithi, she will remain fearless about YamRaaj. YamRaaj granted Yamuna this wish and went to his place YamPuri. Since then, this festival is celebrated by the sisters to wish long life of their brothers.

Puja Vidhi : Sister is supposed to request her brother to sit in the ‘Asana’ and keeping sandalwood paste, roli, mouli, chawal, dhoop, deep, flowers, sweets etc. perform ‘Aarti’ of her brother. Then, after sprinkling pious ‘Ganga’ water on brother, ‘Teeka’ should be applied on the forehead of brother. If she brought any gift item for her brother, then it should be given to brother. And brother should also gift something in return to his sister. Sister now offers food items made by herself to her brother and wish him long life without any disturbances. Brother should enjoy the food items with pleasure and happiness of mind.

Dwitiya Tithi is starting from 06.13 am on 29 October 2019 and will continue till 03.48 am of 30 October 2019
